Who is Rich Maltzman?
I consider myself a ‘pracademic’ – currently Master Lecturer at Boston University, an author, and a consultant, who provides students and clients with a deep, rich learning experience and/or improved results. The ‘prac’-tical part of pracademic comes from a 40-year career in telecom, mainly in engineering and project management. At the University level, my focus is always on on the converting weaknesses into strength while teaching clients/students how to apply learned skills to everyday situations. I’ve presented on the topics of Quality and PM, Sustainability, and PM Competency at PMI conferences in the US, Italy, Malaysia, Costa Rica, Canada, and The Netherlands, where I also lived for two years on an international PMO assignment.

I’m the principal of EarthPM, a company devoted to integrating sustainability thinking into project management. Integration of a holistic, global view of project management has resulted in international consulting and speaking engagements in which the focus is the long-term success of projects, with an eye towards ecological and social systems. My blog for PMI’s projectmanagement.com site has become very popular. In parallel with my 32-year career in the PMO of a multinational telecom, I’ve been teaching graduate-level PM and decision making classes at Boston University, having worked earlier at Clark University. I’ve taught at Shenyang University of Technology in China. No stranger to PMI, I’m a former VP of Professional Development for PMI Mass Bay (the Boston area PMI Chapter), and I’m on the Review Committee for the upcoming 7th Edition PMBOK® Guide.

Change Management and Transitions for Project, Program, and Portfolio Managers
Rich spoke to my department this fall about lessons learned from an incident that was very close to us. His engaging and collaborative style allowed us to dive into some of the core project management issues and led us to reflect on our own styles and skillsets. It was a great opportunity for us
- Nicole Begnal, Project Manager at National Grid
I At the July 2020 PMI Mass Bay meeting, Rich provided an engaging presentation – “Fire in the Valley”, which discussed the Columbia Gas explosions in the Merrimack Valley. He covered key topics around risk management and lines of authority in this case study. Breakout sessions (virtual) were also done, where the attendees identified problem areas and ways the disaster could have been avoided. This was a highly-rated presentation and we look forward to having Rich speak at our chapter in the future.
- Greg Paul, VP of Professional Development at PMI Mass Bay
I had the pleasure of Emcee'ing a conference where Rich presented and it was a thrill to work with him because of his experience, passion, enthusiasm and knowledge. From the moment he spoke, he engaged the attendees with an informative, entertaining and accessible presentation which encouraged interaction and audience engagement.
